Cold emailing (unsolicited outreach by email) is not inherently abuse, but whether it crosses a line depends on how it’s conducted.
✅ When It’s Not Abuse:
- It’s relevant and targeted, such as B2B outreach with clear value.
- The sender complies with regulations like:
- GDPR (EU)
- CAN-SPAM (U.S.)
- CASL (Canada)
- It includes a clear and easy opt-out or unsubscribe option.
- The sender avoids bulk/spammy messaging and uses personalization.
❌ When It Becomes Abusive:
- Sending bulk emails from scraped or purchased lists.
- Ignoring or hiding unsubscribe mechanisms.
- Sending irrelevant, deceptive, or repetitive emails.
- Continuing to send emails after a recipient asks you to stop.
